An important element of modern sonar suites is the Track Motion Analysis (TMA) suite that processes observed bearing (and Doppler) measurements from a contact to form estimates of the source location and trajectory.

Conventionally, TMA algorithms rely on a simplifying assumption that sound has reached the sensor by following a straight ray path. While it is well understood that sound travels via refractive and reflective ray paths, over short contact ranges, the simplification holds quite well.

However, as the sensitivity of sonar sensors continues to improve, towed and hull mounted sensors routinely hold contacts at substantial ranges at which the simplifying assumption becomes invalid. At such ranges, the impact on the underwater environment becomes the dominant constraint on the performance of a tracking system.

Cirrus has developed CoLT (the Contact Localisation Tool) is a powerful track localisation library that uniquely accounts for the complexities of the underwater medium. The CoLT algorithm identifies the (direct or indirect) path on which a track is being received, and caters for non-linear ray propagation  effects to accurately assess a contact’s track dynamics.

Cirrus has been awarded multiple APB contracts relating to CoLT.
